Challenges and solutions to support good equine welfare practice in Ireland
UCD have just published the UCD Equine Welfare report: "Challenges and solutions to support good equine welfare practice in Ireland".

This report is the distillation of the results of a three year study at UCD. The research team was led by Joe Collins, President of Veterinary Ireland and Dr. Vivienne Duggan, Vice-Chair of the Equine Group, supported by Dr. Alison Hanlon, Dr. Paddy Wall and Dr. Simon More. The project was funded by World Horse Welfare.

The study examined equine welfare issues across the entire Irish horse industry and identified several key problems, such as lack of an effective equine identification system, education of horse owners and enforcement of existing legislation. Areas where significant progress have been made were also identified and these were used to inform the development of possible strategic solutions. The report manages to condense a huge amount of data and several years of hard work into just 42 pages, making it a short and highly informative read. It is also beautifully illustrated throughout. A lack of hard data has been one factor that has hindered progress in relation to horse welfare in recent years. This report is a very significant first step towards quantifying and solving the problems that we all face as part of the horse industry and everyone who has an interest in the Irish horse should read it.

Hard copies of the report will be available at upcoming Veterinary Ireland CVE events.
