Irish College of Veterinary Surgeons

Chairperson: Damien O'Donoghue

One of the principle aims of Veterinary Ireland is to promote the science of veterinary medicine and the quality of animal and public health in various ways including the provision of opportunities for the Continuing Veterinary Education (CVE) of members.
CVE has become even more important to members over the past few years, and will remain important, if not critical, as the Veterinary Council of Ireland will be introducing Mandatory CVE for Registration from 1st January 2012. This means that in order to maintain Registration to practise veterinary medicine in Ireland, members will have to obtain 20 CVE Credits per year, or have a total of 60 CVE Credits over the previous three years.
The mission of the ICVS is to promote and provide excellent and relevant Continuing Veterinary Education to all sectors of the veterinary profession in Ireland and to assist veterinary surgeons to comply with their CVE obligations so that Irish Veterinary Surgeons will aspire to, and achieve, the highest levels of post-graduate veterinary education. Its goals include ensuring that a high standard of veterinary practice is maintained by organising Continuing Veterinary Education aimed at different levels of expertise; assessing the needs and requirements for CVE for veterinary surgeons and others, including Veterinary Nurses, involved in the production, health and welfare of animals; and to create and foster the ICVS as a valuable resource centre for veterinary information.
Members of Veterinary Ireland, in recognition of their contributions to the parent body, have free membership of the Irish College of Veterinary Surgeons. Veterinary Ireland members enjoy substantially reduced registration fees for Irish College of Veterinary Surgeons supported courses and can purchase Irish College of Veterinary Surgeons publications at special member rates. They are also entitled to avail of the administrative services of the Board of the Irish College of Veterinary Surgeons
