Each Interest Group nominates their Chairperson to sit on the National Council. Those Interest Groups with more than 100 members (Currently Food Animal, VICAS and Equine) nominate an additional member. The balance, up to 21 members, is then weighted in proportion to membership numbers in each Interest Group. In addition the National Council can Co-opt up to four more members in order to provide for balanced representation.
Two seats are automatically filled on the National Council, the incoming President and the Immediate Past-President.
A Vice-President is elected by the incoming National Council. The Vice-President automatically becomes the President in the following year. In addition, the National Council elects the Honorary Treasurer of the Organisation, who is responsible for the Organisation’s funds.
The National Council’s work includes the approval of strategies for the implementation of policies; monitors the implementation of motions passed by the AGM; proposes policy motions or rule changes to the AGM; considers reports from the Board of Directors; deals with and decides on items referred to it by the Board or the Interest Groups; considers exceptional financial items and makes and amends appropriate Bye-Laws as necessary.
